Claiming Rights
As stated in the Declaration of Sentiments, women had been denied rights that men were given.
· Women did not have right to vote
o “He has never permitted her to exercise her inalienable right to the elective franchise.”
· Married women became under the control of their husband
o “He has made her, if married, in the eye of the law civilly dead.”
· Husband has control of the profits wife earns and property
o “He has taken from her all right in property, even to the wages she earns.”
· Husband is wife's master, compared to slavery
o “promise obedience to her husband, he becoming, to all intents and purposes, her master—the law giving him power to deprive her of her liberty and to administer chastisement.”
· Women in domestic sphere of household duties and childcare. When divorced, husband gains control of children.
